Diwali celebrations in London: information and photos

Diwali is celebrated each year by the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities. It is known as the Festival of Lights, and represents the victory of light (Good) over darkness (Evil). It is in October or November: it is timed to coincide with the new moon (the darkest night of the month), so the date varies from one year to the next. This year's Diwali is on Tuesday 28 October 2008 (the following day is the start of the Hindu New Year).

(2) BAPS SHRI SWAMINARAYAN MANDIR, NEASDEN

The celebrations of Diwali at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Neasden, 105-119 Brentfield Road, London NW10 8LD (Neasden Temple, in north-west London) will be on
Tuesday 28 October 2008
The timetable is:
Chopda Pujan from 6:30-7:30pm
There is a spectacular fireworks display starting at about 8:45pm (in Gibbons Recreation Ground, behind the nearby school).

Annakut Darshan is on Wednesday 29 October 2008 (Annakut is the celebration of the New Year)
Celebrations are from 12-9pm: Arti is every half hour from 12-9pm

This year's theme is "Go Green…Go Veg…"
Through a series of eye-opening presentations in the waiting areas, visitors will be informed of the positive impact of a vegetarian diet on the environment. Some of the facts are indeed astonishing. For example, according to a recent report by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, the livestock industry is responsible for 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. That's more than all the world's cars, trucks, trains, planes and boats combined!

"The aim," explains Yogesh Patel, head of communications at the temple, "is to inspire visitors to do their bit for the environment and raise awareness about the impact of one's diet."
"Good food," he adds, "need not cost the Earth; in fact, it may even help save it if it is vegetarian."

For further details visit: http://www.mandir.org

Hot snacks are available from foodstalls on both days.
Please kindly note: For security reasons, bags and cameras will not be allowed into the Mandir Complex.
Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of the special transport facilities arranged by Transport for London.
Nearest Tube stations are Neasden, Stonebridge Park or Harlesden.

(3) LEICESTER

The UK's largest Diwali celebrations take place in Leicester in the Midlands
(Leicester became the home of the UK's largest Gujarati community after Idi Amin expelled Asians from Uganda in 1972).
Diwali festivities are centred around Belgrave Road and include dancing, music and fireworks.
There is one ceremony for the switching on of lights in Leicester, and another event centred around Diwali itself.
The main organisers are Leicester City Council and Leicester Hindu Festival Council (LHFC).
Leicester also has the UK's largest Navratri celebrations (Navrati is the Hindu festival of nine nights)
